Treyarch – Stopping Power Not a Viable Perk and Weapon Balance Solution
Posted on January 17, 2012 AT 08:00am
THE BUZZ: David Vonderhaar, Game Design Director at Treyarch, recently spoke to fans about weapon balance in Call of Duty and whether stopping power could be the answer.
What seems like a long time ago fans started moaning that stopping power was an overpowered perk, rendering all other same tier perks obsolete. This caused its removal from the last few Call of Duty titles. However, now it appears that fans would like to see its return as they believe this could actually address the balance issues that the franchise has been experiencing. Vonderhaar addressed these concerns on Twitter:
“Stopping Power isn’t a viable solution. Solid mechanics with good tuning (and ability to real-world experiment with those tunables) is. I am not making any assumptions. I am looking at the root cause and core tuning and so should you. Good talk, though.”
EGM’s TAKE: This basically says, don’t expect to see stopping power make a comeback in the next Call of Duty game. The problem developers face is that by fixing one imbalance you create 10 more. For instance, once Stopping Power was removed the Ghost perk became too overpowered, so then fans called for it to be toned down as well. Basically developers will never win as one slightly wrong tweak and everything goes out the window.
