Twitch Plays Pokémon returns with Pokemon X

Posted on July 28, 2014 AT 01:49am

Unlikely social phenomenon Twitch Plays Pokémon has returned, and this time it’s Pokémon X that is getting the crowd-based input treatment. Unlike previous titles, Twitch Plays Pokémon X won’t use an emulator, but will instead be played using a modified 3DS that was created by Reddit user “dekuNukem.”

“The 3DS Streaming Console with External Control Interface, or 3xtDS in short, is a modified Nintendo 3DS console equipped with an capture card and an USB interface that allows the complete control of buttons, circle pad, and touch screen from an external source, as well as streaming high quality video of the content of both screen and sound back to the host to be recorded, or broadcast,” “dekuNukem” explains.

Since the game is running on an actual 3DS it means that online functionality can be enabled, allowing stream players to battle or trade with others.
