U.K. video game sales are down approximately 40 percent year-on-year for the month of June, with only 2.1 million games being sold.

Revenue from sales fell 38 percent from the £78.4 million raised last June, to £48.4 million this year. The number one selling game for the month was Ghost Recon: Future Solider, followed by LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, which has been at the top of the U.K. charts for the last three weeks.

These figures come alongside a prediction, by Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter, claiming that U.S. sales for June will have fallen 34 percent year-on-year.

There are a number of factors involved here, first there’s the economic climate, people have been tightening their belts and luxuries like video games are among the first items cut. Then there’s the lack of major AAA releases in June. Finally, many people are switching to online retailers, due to them being able to charge lower prices for games. Consumers will always go where the prices are cheapest, and the high street is losing the battle.
