During E3, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot admitted to VentureBeat that the company’s concerns over Wii U hardware and software sales led to Rayman Legends‘ delay and multiplatform release.
“What happened was that we saw the Wii U was not going to sell enough of those games. The game is going to be fantastic, and we didn’t want those creators to wind up in a position where even after making a fantastic game, they didn’t sell well enough,” Guillemot told VentureBeat.
“We decided that we had to come out on enough machines that players can try it out on any one that they have, and give more time to both improve the game on the Wii U and create versions for the other consoles,” he added.
In April, Nintendo CEO and president Satoru Iwata acknowledged the Wii U’s poor hardware and software sales himself, citing confusion about the Wii U being a peripheral for Wii as part of the cause.
Guillemot’s concern, if nothing else, a valid one. Making videogames is a business, and it’s smart business to expand the scope of your audience in an effort to make a profit and, y’know, ensure that future iterations can happen.
Rayman Legends launches on PS3, PS Vita, Xbox 360, and Wii U August 30 in Europe, September 3 in North America.
