THE BUZZ: Ubisoft today announced that they had acquired RedLynx, the Finland-based game developer known for titles such as their popular Trials franchise, along with the iOS release DrawRace 2.
“The team at RedLynx has developed exceptionally strong digital brands that stand out for their high replay value, their long tail sales and their multiplatform positioning,” said Ubisoft chief executive officer Yves Guillemot. “We are delighted to welcome RedLynx to the Ubisoft family. Their expertise in asynchronous online games and physics-based game mechanics provides us with a great opportunity to bring their powerful brands, most notably Trials, to an even broader range of fast-growing digital platforms.”
EGM’s TAKE: I always get a little worried whenever a great indie developer gets purchased by a larger game publisher. Sometimes things go great—which I hope will be the case for RedLynx. Other times, the partnership is rocky right from the start, and the small developer struggles along until they finally find themselves being closed and their properties gobbled up into their former parent company.
