At their E3 briefing today, Ubisoft unveiled a new trailer for their upcoming World War I–themed puzzle-adventure game, Valiant Hearts: The Great War. While we’ve previously seen the UbiArt Framework engine used in such whimsical fare as Rayman Legends, this game shows that it’s more than capable of delivering stark, haunting images, too.
The trailer focuses on the individual stories of three soldiers and one medic and seems to give equal billing to those from both the Allies and Central Powers, humanizing the conflict that left around 17 million dead—10 million military, 7 million civilian. With the 100th anniversary of the conflict approaching, it’s a good time to reflect on the first global war, one that played such a pivotal role in shaping the rest of the 20th century. But Valiant Hearts won’t be about guns, ammo, and trench warfare—it’s about the men and women who gave their lives in perhaps the most brutal battles in world history. The game releases on June 25th on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
