Ubisoft to Invest $500 Million in Splinter Cell Studio

Posted on May 3, 2012 AT 07:33am

Ubisoft has announced plans to invest $500 million into its Toronto studio, in an attempt to replicate the success of its Montreal office.

The studio was founded in 2009, and is headed by ex-Assassin’s Creed producer Jade Raymond. It is currently working on the next Splinter Cell title and reportedly plans to announce it soon.

At the moment the studio has around 210 programmers and Ubisoft hopes to increase that to more than 800 over the next ten years. That’s a huge commitment and shows that the company obviously has faith in its Toronto branch. Things have been very quiet in terms of the Splinter Cell series, with the latest release being HD versions of the three original games. Raymond has promised that the next game will return to the series’ roots. Fans will certainly be happy with this as many thought Conviction was a little too action movie-esque compared to older games in the franchise.

The Ontario government has also promised to give the studio $263 million CAD over the next ten years. It’s always good to see official backing for video games. Consideratons like these show just how important the medium has become to local areas and even countries. The industry is worth a lot in this modern era, so helping it grow is the obvious and smart thing to do.

What should be added or changed in the next Splinter Cell? Let us know your ideas below.
