Yesterday, a leaked GameStop memo seemed to hint that the upcoming “K” model revision of PS3 would bar owners of the console from playing video games or movies in high-definition over anything but an HDMI cable.

Seems that was only part right, as Sony today clarified the situation. Due to the AACS Final Adopter Agreement, new devices at this point must have certain limits on how they can output HD video – such as that from Blu-ray movies – to a television. Due to that, only an HDMI connection can provide the full high-definition stream, as that technology has limits built in to help avoid copying the video.

Video games, however? Still perfectly fine over component video. The mistake came from the GameStop internal memo, which listed both gaming and movies as now being blocked. GameStop, according to Kotaku, are now aware of the error, and are correcting it.
