(UPDATE) True Crime: Hong Kong Now Called ‘Sleeping Dogs’ – Releasing This Year

UPDATE: Sleeping Dogs has now been officially confirmed by Square-Enix. An announcement trailer and screenshots can be found below.

THE BUZZ: Cancelled Actvision title True Crime: Hong Kong has been renamed Sleeping Dogs by new publisher Square-Enix and will be releasing this year.

That’s according to retailer Future Shop who tweeted the details from a Destination PlayStation event in Arizona. A Sleeping Dogs trademark was filed by Square-Enix last month which many, including ourselves, thought was a new Kane and Lynch game. Now we know the truth.

United Front Games was developing the title for Activision before it was axed, after the game was basically complete, claiming it wouldn’t make its money back. Square-Enix announced last year that they had brought the rights to the game and it was still in development at a Vancouver studio being overseen by Square Enix London Studios.

According to Future Shop the title is due out in August for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

EGM’s TAKE: Well, there’s a curve ball that no one expected. We knew the title was still in development and would get released this year but the sneaky trademark and name change is pretty sly. Who knows how much of the game has changed, considering it was basically good to go when it was axed. Will Square Enix keep the same fundamental gameplay, or did they strip it bare and add its own features? Guess we’ll have to wait for the first footage to find out. On a (small) sad note, this does mean that there is no third Kane and Lynch title in development, at least that we know of.
