Valve Announces Linux-Based Operating System ‘SteamOS’

Posted on September 23, 2013 AT 10:54am

In the first of their three scheduled announcements this week, Valve unveiled their new Linux-based operating system, SteamOS.

“We’ve come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built aroundSteam itself,” reads the official SteamOS page. “SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.”

According to Valve, the company already has “hundreds of great games” running on SteamOS, and will be announcing the triple-A titles coming to SteamOS in 2014 in the coming weeks. One of the features being touted is the ability to stream Steam games through SteamOS, meaning the service’s entire catalog of Windows and Mac titles would be available on machines running SteamOS.

Valve is also working “with many of the media services you know and love” to bring streaming music, television, and movies to Steam and SteamOS. Their new operating system will also support the recently announced Family Sharing system that allows digital game libraries to be shared with up to ten other people.

The company’s next announcement is coming in two days, at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on September 25. The teaser image shows the circle (which represents SteamOS) contained within brackets, so the announcement will presumably pertain to Valve’s long-rumored “Steam Box.”
