Valve Ballin’—Workin’ on Controllers, Turnin’ Down Hollywood

While appearing on Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist Podcast, Valve’s Gabe Newell revealed that his company is currently developing several PC controllers.

“We’re working on a bunch of controllers,” Newell told Hardwick. Short, sweet, and to the point.

“The PC ecosystem sort’ve stopped evolving at a certain point. Given the success we’ve had, we need to start trying to be interestingly innovative.”

Newell also mentioned how the company has been approached by Hollywood with film pitches of their franchises, including Half-Life  and Left 4 Dead.

“There really were people who came to us with proposals of: ‘Okay, it’s Half-Life 1, and there are horses, and it’s a cavalry charge, and it’s high-tech carbon armor on the horses,’” said Newell. “And we were like, ‘What the fuck are you talking about? Have you even played this?’”

Left 4 Dead  I get—the zombie craze continues, ad nauseam. Hollywood, however, is running out of pre-existing material to pluck. If they aren’t careful, they might just have to write something original—and we can’t have that.

A film adaptation of Half-Life, however, is something I could live without. While the world would make a great set piece, Gordon Freeman isn’t relatable character, or much of a character at all—he’s science nerd wish fulfillment for white males. I suspect Gabe Newell knows full well that any personality Hollywood tried to give him would be rejected by Half-Life fans. Everyone fills in the blank slate that is Gordon Freeman with their own ideas. Best to keep it that way.
