Valve Denies Steam Box Console Rumors

Posted on March 9, 2012 AT 08:28am

THE BUZZ: Valve’s Doug Lombardi has denied all rumors regarding the company’s plans to release its own console hardware.

Rumors emerged last week that Valve is working on a “Steam Box” –  a console-like piece of hardware that would be capable of playing Steam games on your TV with a controller.

However, Lombardi has denied this rumor stating that it is based on development boxes that Valve uses to test software.

“We’re prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we’re building boxes to test that on,” he told Kotaku.

Big Picture mode is a new Steam UI built for TV displays allowing gamers to access their Steam library on more screens in the house.

“We’re also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we’ve talked about a fair amount. All of that is stuff that we’re working on, but it’s a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware,” he added. ”We’re always putting boxes together. Going all the way back to the Half-Life 1 days, we built special boxes to test our software render… it’s just part of development.”

EGM’s TAKE: There’s absolutely no reason for Valve to enter the hardware market, as they are doing perfectly fine where they are. In fact, so perfectly fine that Forbes listed co-founder Gabe Newell as a billionaire. Even though it would be a neat little piece of kit, it also would be relatively pointless. You can already hook a PC up to your TV and run Steam through that, so why would they go to effort of creating something that doesn’t really have a market? We’re glad that Steam is staying where it is.
