Valve’s Brian Coomer has said that the company will put out a virtual reality SDK during the company’s Steam Dev Days conference, which kicks off January 14 in Seattle.
Speaking with the BBC at the Computer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Coomer explained that the toolset has been designed with the hopes of standardizing the way games interface with VR technologies like the upcoming Oculus Rift headset. The end goal, he said, is to prevent users from having to reconfigure their devices for individual games.
“Steam is in a unique position to be this intermediary between hardware and software and users,” he explained. “Without that its going to be hard for any device to get any serious traction.”
While the Oculus Rift has been publicly endorsed by Valve head Gabe Newell and support has already been patched in for several of their Source Engine games, the company has also been working on their own virtual and augmented reality solutions for the past few years. Coomer confirmed that effort is still ongoing.
“We are working with other companies right now but we have not made any specific announcements,” he said.
