Valve’s Steam Labs lets users try out experimental features

Valve has launched a new Steam feature called Steam Labs that will let users try out experimental features that the team is working on.

“These are works in progress,” Valve warns. “Some of them may turn out great. Others, we may toss out. We hope that most will be improved with your feedback and go on to be a part of Steam. This is the way of Steam Labs.”

The first experiment available is Micro Trailers, which are described as “six-second looping videos designed to quickly inform viewers about titles on Steam with a presentation that’s easy to skim.” Check out these new trailers for yourself here.

Next up is the Interactive Recommender, which uses machine learning to recommend new titles to users. The experiment will take a look at how long each game in your library has been played and then use machine learning to recommend titles based on its findings.

The final available experiment is The Automatic Show, which is an automatically generated 30-minute show that shares the latest and greatest games on Steam each day. Watch the first episode here.

“Like all new Steam features, Steam Labs is itself an experiment, in that it is a work in progress which will only get better with informed iteration,” Valve adds. “We hope you’ll share your ideas and feedback in the discussions. We look forward to experimenting together.”
