Velocity 2X dev shares alpha footage, talks raising the bar in terms of art style

Posted on February 7, 2014 AT 01:45pm

FuturLab managing director James Marsden took to the PlayStation blog to share Velocity 2X alpha footage and talk about the game’s Flashback-inspired art style.

According to James Marsden, Velocity 2X—while obviously a sequel—is considered by the team to also be a spiritual sucessor to Flashback and Another World. To achieve this, FuturLab artist Chris Goff hand-drew what the rotoscoped art style would look like while technical director Hussain Sheikh, who previously worked as visual effects lead on Split/Second brought his expertise to deliver particle explosions, dynamic environment lighting, vignetting, bloom, light refraction, anamorphic lens flare, and more.

“The artists have only just begun dressing the levels with all the effects at their disposal, and the design team still has many levels to design,” Marsden wrote in his PlayStation Blog post. “And of course the animation on Kai is getting another pass. Rest assured, we’ll put every drop of energy we have into making this game a delight.”

Velocity 2X, a mashup of fast-paced Metroid-style action with top-down shoot ‘em up gameplay, will launch on PS4 and PS Vita sometime this year.
