VGAs 2012: Mysterious ‘The Phantom Pain’ Revealed, Related to Metal Gear?

Posted on December 7, 2012 AT 06:55pm

We still know little about the game or its developer, but a new game titled The Phantom Pain was shown off at tonight’s Video Game Awards.

The game seems to focus on an unnamed man who wakes up in a hospital knowing little of his situation and missing his left arm. One of the popular suspicions on the internet was that this is was a viral video for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, especially given that nobody had heard of developer Moby Dick Studios.

Moby Dick Studios is supposedly a real developer over in Sweden, however. Still—hmm. We aren’t ready to dismiss conspiracy theories about that connection just yet. That still doesn’t change the fact that all we know about them—or their new game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3—is what we see in this video.

Update: Well, well—more reasons to believe that The Phantom Pain indeed has some sort of connection to Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. The existence of Moby Dick Studios is being called into question even more at this point, and how about the name of the CEO of this supposed studio: Joakim Mogren. “Joakim” is an anagram for “Kojima” (pointed out by internet superstar Wario64)—as in Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima.

Oh, and then there’s the text near the bottom of this teaser poster for Ground Zeroes:
