Watch Dogs–Ubisoft’s upcoming action thriller based on data distribution and paranoia–has caught the attention of fans with a recent promotion that leaked countless users actual email addresses.

Publisher Ubisoft began an alternate reality game about a fictitious character named Joseph Demarco who runs an art gallery, dotconnexion. Players were urged to sign-up for updates about dotconnexion via the game’s official website. An update sent out today reads:

“It is with great regret that we inform you that Joseph Demarco passed away in a tragic, yet unexplained accident. Being one of the most important philanthropists in the local digital art scene, his demise has left a deep void in the community. Out of respect for his friends and family, the dotconnexion exhibition will be cancelled. Sincerely yours, The dotconnexion Team”

Everybody who signed up for updates was sent this message, however this isn’t the interesting part, whoever sent this email included everyone’s email address in the CC line and not the Bcc line, meaning that users are now stuck receiving countless emails. This also means that every user’s email address is visible to everyone, and while not much can be done with just an email address, but in today’s world it’s a little worrying to see.

Apparently only people whose email addresses begin with either a number or early letter in the alphabet have been affected by this. Whether this is part of a publicity stunt or a genuine mistake on Ubisoft’s part is still unknown.
