‘We Are to Blame’ Says Iwata about Wii U Sales

In order to remain competitive, the Wii U currently sells below its manufacturing cost. Nintendo is actually losing money for every system they sell. Because of this, Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata is hesitant about going forward with a price drop.

In an interview with CNBC, Iwata said, “From the very beginning we came up with a very aggressive price point. We do not think [a price cut] is a very easy option to take.”

Iwata doesn’t blame the consumers as much as he blames himself, and the Nintendo brand. ”We are to blame,” he said. “We relaxed our [marketing] efforts, so the consumers today still cannot understand what’s so good and unique about the Wii U.” Iwata goes on to admit that the company doesn’t have a killer app to excite consumers and push console sales. The Wii had Wii Sports, but the Wii U is still trying to find its audience.

The lack of console sales has already extended its reach to third-party developers. EA and Ubisoft, two major studios, have scaled back their support since Wii U’s launch last year. “I do not think we should become too pessimistic about the current situation with the Wii U. I think we should pour that time and energy into our [development] efforts, so eventually we can encourage third-party [publishers] to want to support Nintendo,” an optimistic Iwata said in response.

Now that E3 2013 is behind us—bringing with it a few major titles announced for Wii U, including Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and Bayonetta 2—the question remains: Will they be enough to drive sales this Holiday season?
