The recent numbers are in, and the PlayStation 4 once again had the top console sales of the month.
According to the NPD Group’s May report (as reported by VentureBeat), the PlayStation 4 beat out the Xbox One in sales during the month. This continues Sony’s streak, with October 2015 being the last time that the Xbox One outsold the PlayStation 4.
Somewhat surprisingly, new hardware sales in the United States have declined 10 percent when compared to May 2015. While one may assume this has to do with the fact that both Xbox and PlayStation are anticipated to announce upgraded consoles at E3, Liam Callahan?an NPD analyst?placed the drop on hand-held systems.
“[T]he majority of the decline in sales stemmed from portables, down $7.3 million and 7th generation hardware, down $5 million,” said Callahan. “Eighth generation hardware unit sales were stable, but dollar sales decreased by 2 percent or $3 million due to a decrease in average price for these consoles.”
Retail game sales were up 18 percent since the same time last year, thanks to an amazing May line-up. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End topped software sales, beating out Doom and Overwatch. The top 10 games sold in May are listed below.
- Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
- Grand Theft Auto V
- NBA 2K16
- Call of Duty: Black Ops III
- MLB 16: The Show
- Dark Souls III
