Nintendo has released system update 5.0.0 for Wii U that adds a quick start menu, GamePad alerts, and more.

Once installed, a quick start menu will be displayed when the Wii U is powered up—instead of the Home screen—that allows users to instantly start recently played or newly installed software. Also, special alerts from Nintendo will be displayed on the Wii U GamePad when the system is powered down, removing the need to power up the console to see them. This alert system can be turned off in the settings.

Future system updates will also be automatically downloaded and installed when the console is in standby mode, following this update.

You can check out the full list of changes here.
