Nintendo–rather sheepishly–announced that the Wii U will support two GamePads simultaneously at E3 this year. Sadly it appears that early adopters will be stuck with just using the one.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Gamasutra that he expects developers to spend all their time figuring out how best to utilize one tablet before even considering looking at two. “Games need to be built that can take advantage of the two GamePad controllers,” he said. “It’s going to be well after launch for those game experiences to come to life.”

“Asymmetric gameplay is going to be the next major step forward, just like active play was when we launched the Wii,” Reggie added. “We think that’s where developers will focus first, then there will be multiple experiences that have two GamePads.”

This was quite a major announcement, however Nintendo chose to only mention it in passing during E3 this year. Basically, the company said that it is coming, but it still has no idea how it’s going to work. This just adds to the haphazard affair that was the Nintendo press conference. So much potential was wasted last week it makes us sad just thinking about it.

Nintendo–rather sheepishly–announced that the Wii U will support two GamePads simultaneously at E3 this year. Sadly it appears that early adopters will be stuck with just using the one.
