Will PS Vita Be Region Free? There’s Hope!

Posted on June 13, 2011 AT 02:59pm

After generations of handhelds that allowed games to be played from all regions, Nintendo unfortunately disappointed many by region locking the 3DS. For the PS Vita, however, there’s hope that Sony won’t make the same mistake.

That hope comes from Michael Denny, Vice President of Sony Worldwide Studios Europe. In talking to European and Australian press at E3, Denny stated that “to the best of his knowledge” the PS Vita would remain region free.

Unlike Nintendo, Sony has been taking a stance of progressing away from region locking on their gaming hardware. The PSP was region free when it came to UMD-based games (UMD movies, however, were typically region encoded), and the PS3 not only removed region locking from games, but the overall Blu-ray spec greatly reduced the amount of regions that movies were locked to.

So, while this certainly isn’t a definitive answer to the question of region locking on the PS Vita, it gives us all hope that Sony won’t make the same anti-consumer move that Nintendo took.
