It turns out that cross-play between the PlayStation 4 and PC versions of Fortnite Battle Royale is totally possible. You just need to jump through a few hoops first.
There’s been a rising movement to create more cross-play in games, letting players on consoles join games with their friends on PC or on other systems. Thanks to Microsoft managing both the Xbox and Windows platforms, cross-play between the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs is becoming much more common. The situation is trickier on the PlayStation 4 side of things, but Fortnite developer Epic Games has found a way to make PS4 to PC cross-play work.
Setting up a Fortnite Battle Royale match with a PS4 player and a PC player requires some work, however. The gist of it is that the PlayStation 4 player must link their PlayStation Network account to their Epic Games account through Epic’s official website, then add the PC player to their friends list while on the website.
To be more specific, the PS4 player should log in to the Epic Games official website, navigate to Connected Accounts, then choose to connect under the PlayStation Network option. From there, they’ll be directed to the PlayStation website, where the player must log in again to finish linking the two accounts.
Then, the PS4 player should download the Epic Games launcher to their PC, log in once again, and click the Add Friend button. At this point, it’s finally possible to look up your PC-using friend and add them to your list. Once the PC friend accepts that invitation, the PS4 player will be able to jump back into the game on PS4. The PC-playing friend should appear on the in-game friends list, and can be invited to the party and to voice chat from there.
This isn’t the first time Fortnite has allowed cross-play, but it’s the first time that it’s seemingly intentional. For a brief time last September, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players were briefly able to play together, though this was apparently the accidental result of a “configuration issue.” Still, it shows that wider cross-play is possible, should all parties get on board to support it.
