World of Warcraft loses 800,000 subscribers, down to 6.8 million

Posted on August 6, 2014 AT 02:05am

Blizzard has announced that its hugely popular MMO World of Warcraft has dropped 800,000 subscribers over the last quarter.

Total subscriptions now stand at 6.8 million, down from the 7.6 million reported at the end of the last quarter. Blizzard president and co-founder Mike Morhaime stated that the game ”remains healthy,” and that the drop was expected due to the last expansion, Mists of Pandaria, reaching the end of its life cycle.

“As expected, we did see a decline in subscribers, which mostly came out of the East. This pattern is right in line, percentage wise, with the drop that we saw at the end of Cataclysm’s cycle in Q2 2012,” he said.

Blizzard is set to announce the official release date of World of Warcraft‘s next expansion, Warlords of Draenor, next week.
