Xbox 360 To get PS3-Style MLAA Anti-Aliasing, ‘Quality Bar Raised’

Posted on June 29, 2011 AT 08:52am

The PS3 may lose one of its graphical advantages over the Xbox 360 thanks to a team working on implementing a version of Sony’s MLAA Anti-Aliasing technique seen in games such as God of War and Killzone 3 into Microsoft’s console.

Sony created an effect dubbed MLAA that used all 5 of the PlayStation 3 SPU’s to create a smoother overall image which many of Sony’s first and third party titles use.

It seemed that the Xbox 360′s CPU just couldn’t match the power used by the PlayStation 3, however a team of two developers have managed to get it working on the console and they claim that their version is superior to Sony’s.

The PS3 version takes 3.4ms to render however Jorge Jiminez one of the developers says;

On the Xbox 360 we run at 2.47ms, with still a lot of optimisations to try,

We cant speak for all the MLAA(-like) implementations out there, but
we think our current version 1.6 (the one used for these comparisons)
has raised the quality bar considerably,

In our tests, it produces results on par (when not superior) to CPU MLAA.
