Will Avatars still be around on the Xbox One? While Microsoft’s FAQ may seem to say one way, a Microsoft rep had another answer.
Near the end of the Xbox One new released posted to their website yesterday, Microsoft posted this particular footnote:
Some Xbox Live content and features available on Xbox 360, including avatar content and some apps, are not available with Xbox Live on Xbox One.
So, what does that mean? Some have taken that to mean that Avatars themselves would no longer be part of the Xbox experience, but my take from that line is that some of your purchased Avatar content won’t make the transition from the current Xbox platform to the next (possibly due to rights, incompatibility, or some other reason).
Why do I feel so confident about that? Because I had the chance yesterday to speak to Ben Kilgore, corporate vice president at Xbox, and Avatars were one of the questions I had for him. With no sign of them during the presentation, would the Rare-crafted virtual representations of gamers still have a home on Microsoft gaming platforms?
“Avatars are still around. Identity is a big thing for us. We believe on Xbox One, people will start to use more real images of themselves as well, but we still support Avatars.”
So, there you go. For any of you out there who hate Avatars, sorry?they aren’t going away. For people like me who love them, don’t fret over their fate.
