THE BUZZ: The Xbox is today celebrating its 10th anniversary in Europe.

On this very day ten years ago, March 14 2002, the original Xbox released in the U.K. and sparked a rise to the top that no one could have predicted.

Until the Xbox came along Sony had enjoyed a relatively unchallenged time at the top with its PlayStation. But the Xbox offered something different with equal power and, finally Sony had a fight on its hands. Plus Microsoft had a little game called Halo in its corner, which helped a lot.

EGM’s TAKE: As the years went by Microsoft slowly ate away at Sony’s marketshare and console dominance until we reach today, where some would even argue that Microsoft and the Xbox 360 is now the more dominant of the two. Will this still be the balance in another 10 years? Or will we not even have consoles by that point? We won’t know until we get there. So for now, congratulations Xbox.
