An option to gift purchases on the Xbox Store is not far away, according to to Xbox and Windows corporate VP Mike Ybarra.

Responding to a fan who asked how far away we are from getting the ability to gift purchases to friends, he simply said, “Not far!”

“Gift to a friend” is currently the fourth most requested feature for the Xbox Store on the official Xbox site, behind the option to convert physical games to digital, game rentals, and the option to lend digital games to a friend for a period of time.

Steam users on PC have the option to purchase games as gifts, but the feature is missing on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
