Xbox One Kinect ‘Has Ten Times the Power of its Predecessor’

Microsoft’s Xbox One Kinect is said to have ”ten times the power of its predecessor,” according to Rare. Ltd’s Nick Burton, but just how are developers taking advantage of this new power?

“It can register a fingertip from three meters away, a feat that was impossible last generation, and its wider field of tracking means it can register more players and at closer distances,” Burton claims. He went on to add that the new Kinect allows the Rare team to reflect specific hand movements during rock climbing in its latest title Kinect Sports Rivals.

With most current-gen Kinect titles your Xbox Live Avatar is used as your character, however thanks to the upgraded Kinect the game can ”capture your facial structure, hair, skin color, body composition and even expression, and build a remarkably accurate virtual athlete – your Champion – in seconds,” according to Burton.

Kinect can also be used to simplify certain tasks while gaming, ”In fighting games, players like to map their buttons all over the controller,” Creative Director at Microsoft Studios Kenn Lobb explained. ”So when playing Killer Instinct, once you make a profile and set your preferred button configuration, Kinect will instantly recognize when you’re holding the controller and map the buttons accordingly, even if it’s in the middle of a match.”

This is obviously just the tip of the iceberg for next-gen controller-free gaming, but will Kinect 2.0 be able to become a useful gaming tool instead of the cheap gimmick that its predecessor was?
