The Xbox One will retain functionality even when the Kinect is unplugged, Xbox chief product officer revealed to IGN.
“Like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor,” Whitten told IGN.
Senior director of product planning for Xbox Albert Penello confirmed Whitten’s statement on NeoGAF, saying that “the thing we all understood, and hence this change, is that there are some scenarios where people just may not be comfortable. We wanted people to be 100% comfortable, so we allow the sensor to be unplugged.”
When Microsoft first unveiled the Xbox One in may, they made it clear that the camera device was an integral component to the system, and that it was mandatory the Kinect be plugged into the console itself at all times. This marks the third significant change up to the Xbox One that Microsoft has made since announcing the system formally—first the always-on 180, then the inclusion of self-publishing for indies and the ability to convert system into a debug kit.
