Xbox’s October update is set to roll out today, and that means that you’ll finally be able to create and edit one of those new-and-improved avatars.
As seen in last week’s Inside Xbox, the new Xbox Avatar Editor is pretty extensive, and will include a photo booth to make snapping a new, high-quality gamerpic easier than before.
Xbox announced the new avatars all the way back at E3 2017 and were originally scheduled to launch by the end of that year before being delayed to April 2018 and again until, well, now. We’re not exactly sure why it took over a year of delays to introduce the new avatars, but they’re finally here.
The October update isn’t just introducing shinier avatars. Voice activation and navigation is getting a huge buff with Cortana and Alexa device support. You can now use Cortana or Alexa to power on and off your Xbox One, launch games, start your Mixer stream, capture screenshots, and more. Telling Alexa to launch a game when your Xbox is off will turn on your Xbox, sign you in, and launch your game. To celebrate this update, Xbox is offering bundles on qualified for Xbox One S and Xbox One X that will include an Amazon Echo Dot, so you can test the voice operations for yourself.
Dolby Vision will become available on One S and One X with the upcoming update, and the narrator can now speak in more languages like Spanish and Portuguese.
I haven’t gotten the update on my Xbox yet, so it’s unclear exactly when it’s rolling out, but your Xbox should update by the end of the day.
