Veteran strategy game designer Julian Gollop, best known for his work on the original X-COM, has announced his next project, Chaos Reborn.

Gollop revealed the title, an update of his own 1985 ZX Spectrum tactics game Chaos: The Battle of Wizardson Prefundia, a service for promoting upcoming Kickstarter projects.

The original Chaos centered around arena battles of two or more wizards, dueling it out with a wide selection of spells and summons. Reborn will follow the same basic formula but with plenty of modern upgrades, including a procedurally generated single-player campaign, extensive co-op options, and both live and asynchronous online multiplayer functionality for two to six players.

“In my 30 years of game development, after many critically acclaimed projects, I think the original Chaos stands out as a game with unrealised potential,” Gollop says in the announcement. He goes on to reveal that the project has already been in development for a year.

The Chaos Reborn Kickstarter will be launching early this year. At this early stage, the game is planned for release on PC, Mac, and Linux.
