Developer 2K Marin and publisher 2K Games have re-revealed the game that originally debuted as an XCOM FPS, now a third-person shooter titled The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.
Rumors about the XCOM origin story’s re-branding surfaced in March with the appearance of such 2K-registered domains as “whathappenedin62” and “thebureau-thegame.” After years off the gaming press radar, which led many to speculate that the game had been canceled, 2K Games has finally re-revealed the title, which has been renamed The Bureau: XCOM Declassified—a third-person, cover-based, strategy-oriented shooter best compared to Mass Effect.
Creative director Morgan Gray informed EGM that the two biggest changes to what is now known as The Bureau are the shift from first-person perspective to third-person and the inclusion of permadeath, a series staple. According to Gray, 2K hopes to strike a balance between catering to action-oriented third-person shooter enthusiasts as well as fans of Enemy Unknown and the older XCOM games.
Gray also revealed that an extra side-mission, “Code Breakers,” would be offered as a bonus to players who pre-order the game.
The Bureau: XCOM Declassified launches on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 August 20 in North America and August 23 internationally. For more details, check out our first look at The Bureau, take a gander at the game’s official box art below, and watch the live action teaser trailer (also below).
