Xi3′s Piston console, a modular, customizable PC designed for home console–style gaming, will launch on Black Friday November 29, the company announced today.
“Piston is smaller, lighter, and will last longer, provide more gaming options, and be more powerful than any other gaming console on the planet,” Xi3 founder, president, and CEO Jason A. Sullivan said in a press release.
Piston was designed with native triple monitor support, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of SSD storage that can be upgraded to two 512GB mSATA SSDs, and supports controllers, mice and keyboards, and virtual reality peripherals. Xi3′s modular console is powered by a 3.2 GHz AMD Trinity Processor, a Radeon 7000-series GPU, and 8GB DDR3 gaming RAM.
As for Piston’s relationship with Valve, Steam, SteamOS, or its status as a Steam Machine? “Piston console owners will be able to access and play games on/through Steam since it is a Web-based platform open to anyone with an Internet connection and a Steam account, either on a Windows- or a Linux-based system,” reads Xi3′s FAQ page. “So in this regard, Piston could be considered the first commercially available Steam Box.”
Piston consoles will cost $999.00 when the system launches November 29. Xi3 is currently taking pre-orders for the machine through their official website.
