Zeboyd Games—developer of Breath of Death VII and Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode 3 and 4announced their next project: sci-fi RPG Cosmic Star Heroine.

Cosmic Star Heroine takes its cue from classic-era NES, SNES, and Genesis Role Playing Games—series like Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star. And given co-founder Robert Boyd’s admitted love of these games, it’s more quite possible that the game’s protagonist, Alyssa L’Salle (pictured above) is named after Phantasy Star IV heroine Alys Brangwin.

“I’ve been a fan of turn-based RPGs since I first played Dragon Warrior and the original Final Fantasy on the NES,” Boyd told Polygon in an email interview. “I love how RPGs combine adventurous stories, memorable characters, strategic combat, and character progression into one coherent whole. A good 8-bit or 16-bit RPG really draws you into its world in a way that you didn’t see with other games of that era.”

Like Zeboyd’s previous projects, Cosmic Star Heroine will feature 2D pixel art visuals the developers claim will be “bigger and more animated” than their previous games. The game’s turn-based combat will take place on the dungeon maps themselves, instead of transitioning into a separate combat screen. Cosmic Star Heroine will also feature a Suikoden-style headquarters that players can customize by recruiting more characters.

The company will be holding a Kickstarter campaign to fund the game later this year.
