ZeniMax VP Says Fallout 4 Announcement ‘Unrealistic’ at This Stage

Posted on June 21, 2013 AT 02:25pm

Expecting Bethesda to “say or hint” at Fallout 4, or for fans to make assumptions about the unannounced title is a “bad idea” at this stage, ZeniMax vice president Pete Hines told Polygon.

Many—myself included—expected Bethesda to tease Fallout 4 during E3. When it failed to make appearance, disappointment spread across forums and message boards—not to mention bizarre rumors about the game being shown behind closed doors.

“I mean [fans[ have been clambering for a Fallout game for a long time now,” Hines told Polygon. “What people need to understand—whether it is Bethesda Game Studios, Arkane, or anybody—expecting information like that in any short period of time after they moved off one project to the other is really unrealistic.”

And while Hines does acknowledge that Bethesda Game Studios and Todd Howard—the team responsible for Fallout 3—are, in fact, working on their next project, the company won’t make any announcements until Howard tells them he’s ready to unveil the project in question.

“We are not into annual franchises—just trying to spin out a version of our game year, after year, after year—like, we have never done that, I don’t see that it is something that we are doing anytime soon,” Hines said. “But that doesn’t mean that we are going to take our time and wait six or seven years in between a game that a studio puts out. But these are big games that take a long time and folks need to understand that we have a very certain way of going about things.”

As for Bethesda making “considerably more noise” in 2013 as a publisher, Hines pointed toward Elder Scrolls Online, The Evil Within, and Wolfenstein: The New Order as examples of this push. And while perhaps not exactly what Fallout fans want, these titles certainly represent concentrated effort on Bethesda’s part to diversify their portfolio.

I think it’s safe to assume that another Fallout title is something that’s for suresies happening, so rest assured, fellow Fallout fans. It’s-a-comin’, so just be patient.
