Zynga COO Says Social and Mobile Games Threat To Consoles
Posted on May 4, 2012 AT 05:06pm

John Schappert has had many high-ranking positions in the games industry; he was COO of EA for a while, and was also the corporate vice president of Microsoft’s gaming efforts. Now, Schappert is at Zynga—and thinks the console market may be in trouble from social and mobile gaming.
“Traditional gaming is under a little bit of pressure,” Schappert told UK trade outlet MCV. “If those businesses are not ready and want to live in the traditional world, they can. It’s just there’s only going to be a few big games a year. If you’re one of those games, more power to you. If you’re not, it’s going to be tough.”
Schappert likened the situation to film versus TV-where people consumer far more of the bite-size world of television than they do movies. He said the social and mobile gaming worlds capture the “same magic” as TV does.
“People are buying fewer games and playing them longer. A lot of players are stretched for time – they don’t have two hours, they have fifteen minutes and don’t want to spend money,” Schappert continued. “The good news is, while I think that we’re seeing traditional gaming shrink, we’re seeing gaming overall grow. To me it’s a very positive message to the overall industry. But I think some people have to change.”
