Zynga Copies Pokémon Formula With New Mobile Game, Montopia

Posted on September 1, 2012 AT 12:00pm

Zynga is bringing a new mobile game out of their studio, and as usual, it seems to be something less-than-original in design. Dubbed Montopia, the role-playing app features 400 monsters you can capture and evolve.

Most people are calling it a ripoff of Pokémon, but in reality, it’s more like an amalgam of Pokémon and Monster Rancher, due to the game’s focus on fusing creatures together and “freeing” them from various mystical items.

Instead of completing a Pokédex, your task is to complete a “Monstapedia”—but curiously, there’s only three elemental types.

It’s may be similar to Pokémon, but this title doesn’t hold a candle to Little Masters in terms of copycat status.

Most Android users seem to like the game well enough, with 2214 players out of 3052 giving Montopia a 5-star rating. Like most Zynga titles, this one works off micro-transactions, prompting players to buy “coin” currency.

Initially launched in Japan, it’s now available worldwide on Google Play and the App Store.
