Zynga Purchases Draw Something Developer OMGPOP

THE BUZZ: OMGPOP’s social art game Draw Something has become a huge hit in recent weeks—and it seems Zynga took notice of that fact.

EGM’s TAKE: Draw Something has become an overnight sensation for New York-based game developer OMGPOP, and now the company has become part of Zynga in a deal announce just a short time ago today.

“The OMGPOP team has created a game that’s fun, expressive and engenders real social interaction,” CEO and founder of Zynga Mark Pincus said in the company’s announcement of the deal. “Draw Something has captured the imagination of millions of people around the world. We love the way they’ve worked playful and relevant culture into their games from Devo to Daft Punk, from Lin to Beckham. We’re honored to have the opportunity to partner with and support such an innovative team of creative inventors.”

“I want to thank our players, our fans, everyone who’s ever drawn something. You’ve made this game into something truly special,” said OMGPOP CEO Dan Porter in the same announcement. “The game will stay true to you and what you love, and it’s my solemn vow that the magic of Draw Something will not change.”

Not that I can blame a small game developer for taking an offer of big bucks—especially in this current environment—but it is a shame that they couldn’t have continued on as an independent developer. According to sources who talked to All Things D, OMGPOP has recently been netting approximately $250,000 a day thanks to Draw Something—and that’s after Apple has taken their share.

With that kind of money coming in currently, I almost would rather have seen OMGPOP invest in themselves and keep on as a self-owned studio. Then again, maybe they didn’t want to miss their chance for that extra level of security—I just hope that they don’t find being part of a bigger company a trade-off they come to regret.
