Quick Quotes: The Elder Scrolls Online
“Our goal with the PvP system is to have huge battles, tons of players—something on a scale that you’ve never seen before.”
– Matt Firor, game director at Zenimax Online Studios
Although the franchise has made its biggest successes in the first-person adventuring genre, The Elder Scrolls Online makes it seem like Tamriel was always perfectly suited for the MMO world.
At a “behind closed doors” demo for the upcoming title, Matt Firor of Zenimax Online Studios showed off the game’s various cities and dungeons. The Elder Scrolls Online takes place about 1000 years before Skyrim but many familiar elements are completely recognizable, including places like Highrock and Daggerfell, along with monsters like Flame and Frost Atronachs.
Zenimax took a great deal of time noting how the combat and quest systems were geared towards encouraging other players to help other. They stressed that there was no downside in helping other players, and in instances like “public dungeons,” anyone playing the game could easily drop into a fight to aid someone else.
However, the combat looked very basic, with Health, Magicka, and Stamina governing real-time attacks and abilities. By far, the most impressive element I saw was the last part of the demo, where two armies of the three warring factions—the Ebonheart Pact, the Daggerfall Convenant, the Aldmeri Dominion—clashed in a massive 100-on-100 PvP battle.
Zenimax said that they plan to increase the number by a few hundred for mass army battles, which will be a cool thing to see when everyone is online and fighting for control of the Cyrodiil Empire.
