E3 2012: The Weather is a Powerful Thing in Divinity: Original Sin
Posted on June 5, 2012 AT 09:41pm
Magic is a powerful thing, but can it take down mighty enemies?
“Source magic enables players to control the elements, but it looks stupid, why would you want to make it rain? It comes in handy during combat allowing you to dose enemy fires.”
—David Walgrave, producer, Divinity: Original Sin
When discussing some of the unique features that Divinity: Original Sin brings to the table Walgrave mentioned the ability to wield the elements in order to take down foes. It’s a simple system that works surprisingly well.
This easy to use system allows you to set up a defense against certain types of enemies. For instance if facing fire archers, simply cause a rainstorm to lower the power of their attacks. Source magic doesn’t only allow you to control the weather it also gives you power over the elements. This control allows combos to be set-up using the environment. Set a bunch of oil barrels on fire in order to cause a ton of damage to opponents or freeze an enemy to allow your partner to get a free hit on them.
Other uses include using electricity on puddles of water to stun any enemies standing in them – this is especially handy against some of the larger bosses that you will have to fight.
The game’s turned based system works nicely with this feature as it allows for careful planning ahead of time. Intricate set-pieces can be created that have to power to wipe out several enemies in one go. If you truly want to master Divinity: Original Sin then you must first master the elements.
