The Rundown

When is a fighting game not a fighting game? You might answer “when it only has two buttons,” but Divekick is ready to change your mind on that one. Crafted to be a parody of fighting games, Divekick’s entire gameplay is centered around only two options: Dive and Kick. Using various combinations of those two buttons, the game’s cast of characters battle against one another in the grandest of fighting competitions.

The Verdict

When I first heard about Divekick, I assumed it would be a totally silly, gimmicky project that might get old after a short amount of time. Actually playing the game, however, has made me a believer.

On one level, sure, Divekick might be a joke—on another level, however, it’s a totally serious fighting game that can get very competitive very quickly. The amount of actual technique that you can pull off via nothing more than two buttons is really impressive. This is going to be a game that fighter fans will definitely get into, and I would absolutely love to see it be one of the featured titles at next year’s EVO competitions.

What’s even more interesting is what Divekick can mean for beginners. As gameplay is really boiled down to the basics of fighting games—zoning, reading your opponent’s attacks, knowing when to go for offense or defense, etc.—I think this’ll be a fantastic way for any one new to the genre to learn those basics on an easier-to-handle level.
