Back in 1989, Disney’s favorite eccentric millionaire—well, besides Walt himself—was not only the star of a hit after-school cartoon, but also a crazy fun 2D NES platformer from Capcom. Now, Scrooge McDuck and the rest of the DuckTales cast are getting resurrected for the current batch of HD gaming systems.
While I didn’t love the game as much as EGM’s reviews editor Ray Carsillo, I still have a soft spot in my heart for DuckTales. The days of Nintendo’s 8-bit console were also the era of countless classic Capcom platformers, and it’s with good reason that DuckTales is still beloved 20+ years later.
The problem with remaking 8-bit titles, of course, is what to do with the games graphically. The solution for DuckTales: Remastered? Capcom employing the help of one of the current masters of 2D artistry, WayForward. The new sprites the team have crafted for the re-release are utterly stellar, and while backgrounds are rendered in 3D, their design and art style fit together well with those beautifully-crafted character sprites.
I’ve read some concerns online about how the DuckTales remake would control, but I personally had no issues in that regard. I did, to be fair, have a few hesitations—most of them centered around worries over if the game itself will stand the test of time. Some elements of DuckTales are being updated in the revival process, but I’ve not played enough yet to be convinced that what was awesome in 1989 is still just as enjoyable in 2013.
I won’t know for sure until I play the full version of DuckTales: Remastered, but I’ll be happily to hop back into Duckburg to find the answer to my question.
