Not sure what any of this stuff means? Head on over to our E3 hub for all the deets.
You’ll want to be the very best, like no one ever was. To catch them is your real test; to train them is your cause. You will travel across the land, searching far and wide. Each Pokémon to understand, the power that’s inside.
I couldn’t resist. Seriously though, like all previous Pokémon games, the goal is to train up a team of powerful pet monsters and to use their abilities properly to collect eight gym badges, stop a nefarious team of evil doers who would use Pokémon for evil, and claim your rightful place as the greatest trainer of all-time—all while trying to catch ‘em all.
After I was so disappointed by the cookie-cutter effort of Pokémon Black/White 2, everything I saw today in my demo of Pokemon X/Y made me thrilled to still be an avid Pokémon fan.
Not only are we getting an official, new generation of Pokémon that looks to swell the number of species to over 700, but we’re getting two new battle styles, a bevy of new moves to learn, and even a new Pokémon-type for the first time in 14 years.
This new type, the Fairy-type, was brought in to help balance an old issue with us long-time trainers: that the Dragon-types have been infallible. Now, by introducing new species specifically as a counter—as well as retconning older species like Clefairy—the odds will finally be even in those world ranking battles, or just with your buddy down the street who’s been lording that level 100 Dragaonite over you since the Red/Blue days.
There are, however, still some minor remaining issues that don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Most notable of these is that you’re still only allowed one save file. We’ve been through countless generations of handhelds, and we still can’t get multiple save files in a Pokémon game. That means you’ll either need to start over completely if you want to play again, or let the game collect dust, only breaking it out for duels after you get a nice team together.
