Not sure what any of this stuff means? Head on over to our E3 hub for all the deets.
As the next major project from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, The Evil Within promises to bring survival-horror excitement to both current generation system and the upcoming next-gen offerings. The Evil Within centers around detective Sebastian Castellanos, who heads with his partners Joseph and “Kid” to look into mysterious events that have gone down at Beacon Mental Hospital—and ends up getting into more trouble than he bargained for.
Mikami swears that The Evil Within will be his final directorial work, and that it will be “true” survival-horror. So, even before playing a moment of the game, I was already intrigued! As well, it’s been a while since I’ve had a great, original Japanese horror game to sink my teeth into, a genre of games I’ve got a huge soft spot for.
From what I’ve seen of it so far, I’m definitely excited for The Evil Within—but I can also see how some might look at it and instantly be reminded of Resident Evil 4 or Silent Hill. The atmosphere and visual style have that gritty, spooky atmosphere of Konami’s classic franchise, and when it came time for Sebastian to blast away and the are-they-or-aren’t-they-zombies, it did have some resemblance to that beloved chapter of Capcom’s undead franchise.
And yet, I felt like The Evil Within also exhibited its own personality and flair. One of the most curious aspects is the hospital itself—what I got to see at E3 hints that the buildings may act as a sort of nexus for visiting the game’s various mysterious areas. At one point, Sebastian exists the hospital to find the city outside completely destroyed. What could that mean? Did something happen to the world, or is Beacon Mental Hospital a portal to another dimension? Those are just a few of the questions I don’t have answers to yet—but which I can’t wait to find out.
