EGM Preview:
DC Universe Online – The Last Laugh

Posted on June 12, 2012 AT 11:35am

Since its launch in early 2011, DC Universe Online has become one of the bigger names in the MMORPG scene. That place was already partially secured simply due to the license the game was built upon—the world of DC Comics—but was also helped immensely when Sony Online Entertainment added a free-to-play option late last year.

Now, SOE is prepping a new batch of content for DC Universe Online players with The Last Laugh, the fourth official DLC expansion pack for the game.

The Joker, it seems, has grown rather weary of the balance of power that has cropped up—so he’s looking to introduce a little anarchy and chaos again. He steals the codes for the safe houses and HQs on both sides of the battle, and hands them out to the opposing side. Thus, The Last Laugh is built around that idea of heroes and villains making raids on the headquarters of their enemies—even so far as taking the fight to major landmarks like the Watchtower or the Hall of Doom.

For safe house battles, players can battle their opponents in 4 vs. 4 PVP matches; move up to the bigger and badder HQ battles, and it’ll be 8 vs. 8 in a two-part struggle of attacking versus defending.

Of course, you won’t have to enter the battle alone. Iconic Legends characters will join the fights, as each side will see three random Legends teaming up with them to either help in the invasion of the enemy stronghold, or in defending said stronghold against the attackers. The Last Laugh also adds seven new Legends to the already-existing roster: The Kryptonian characters Power Girl, Ursa, and Bizarro, and Laterns Kilowog, John Stewart, Arkillo, and Amon Sur.

What’s interesting about these battles is that the Legends you’ll be fighting alongside aren’t the only random elements. While the maps themselves are pre-created, which maps you’ll be placed into will be random, as will the exact objectives you’ll be given. So, thanks to this, you’ll never know what kind of situation you’ll be tossed into after queuing up for a safe house run.

The team at SOE are adding in a number of other new elements as well. Now—for the first time in DC Universe Online—characters will be able to equip shields, which can be used both as offensive and defensive weapons. Also new is a suite of para-military styles for your character, covering types such as engineering, recon, heavy weapons, sniper, and assault. Creative director Jens Andersen told us that one of the big changes over previous styles is that these para-military options aren’t just stand-alone outfits—their pieces can be mixed and matched.

These new customization options come as part of the Tier 4 PVP additions that are being added to DLC Pack #4, which is based off of the secret, behind-the-scenes organization known as “Checkmate”.

This is just some of the full roster of updates coming in The Last Laugh, which should be hitting for DC Universe Online players on both the PC and PS3 later this month.
