One of the Super Nintendo’s most beloved role-playing games, Secret of Mana, is returning to the modern age in a remake from Square Enix. While players with the coveted SNES Classic system have been able to play the original 1993 version of the game recently, beginning in February 2018 PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC players will get a chance to revisit the fantastical world in a beautiful new way.

I was able to get hands-on time with the latest build of the Square Enix game, seen below. The video covers several of the open-world environments, towns, dungeons, and even a boss fight. Getting to take control of Randi, the game’s hero, on the PlayStation 4 was a joy and felt like a seamless step back into Mana‘s hack-and-slash gameplay. While the 2D sprites of the original have been updated to 3D, the same top-down free-roaming gameplay is still the heart of the game. However, with a step into a new landscape for gaming, are there enough improvements or steps in the right direction to bring something fresh to Secret of Mana? I had a great time re-exploring the world, but I was hoping for a little more to keep me from firing up the 1993 classic and finishing Randi’s journey the old-fashioned way.

Secret of Mana for PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and PC launches February 15th, 2018.
