I had a chance during E3 2017 to try out what ended up being my personal surprise of the show: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. What amounts to a kid-friendly take on turn-based strategy gameplay similar to what is found in games like XCOM, this romp through the Mushroom Kingdom is not like anything else Mario has had to overcome before. When the Rabbids start falling from the sky through a mysterious blue portal, hijinx ensue as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and more must team up with some Rabbids who got in the wardrobe of our heroes in order to untangle this mess.

There was a surprising amount of depth seen in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle as upgrading weapons, tag-teaming with allies, and trying more advanced strategy techniques to overcome an enemy force with some impressive guile were all on display in our 20-minute demo. To see the game in action and how we were able to overcome the game’s first major boss, the Pirabbid Plant, to save Luigi, check out the video below.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a Nintendo Switch exclusive dropping on August 29.

Watch Mario save Luigi in this Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle video

This might be the most unusual tag-team in video game history, but it sure is a lot of fun.
