Indescribable, indestructible! Nothing can stop it! The Blob!

Some of Sony’s Vita launch titles, like Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Dungeon Hunter: Alliance, are serious affairs that require lots of dedication on the part of the player and a ton of immersion on the developers’ side. This game isn’t one of those.

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!!! is a goofy, cartoonish action-platformer-puzzler that puts players in the, er, slime of the Blob, who rolls around and eats everything in sight. Players start off pint-sized in a college dorm—eating screws and quarters—and eventually end up polishing off buildings and more.

What sets Mutant Blobs Attack!!! apart is its simplicity. The game uses traditional controls—left stick for movement, a few buttons for jumping and dropping—and combines that with minimalist gameplay. Most levels require just getting from Point A to Point B, while eating everything in between to unlock Point C.

But there’s a very steady progression cycle that constantly unveils new features, like a ground smash, magnetic movement, zero-gravity flatulent propulsion, and more. Each new control method’s as easy to learn as the last—a rarity in today’s gaming landscape. The comical ’60-style sci-fi-horror cinematics and old-school cartoon backgrounds create a vibrant, humorous feel through the whole experience. It’s impossible to take anything seriously—and that’s a good thing.

Alongside 18 traditional levels, the game also offers six bird’s-eye-view levels where you control the Blob by tilting the Vita. These segments are all about gobbling up things and growing, and they’re also some of the most enjoyable parts of the game. No special controls—just find and eat anything, be it pizza, cows, or even tanks.

For its 4 to 6 hours of gameplay, Mutant Blobs Attack!!! is a fun little game. It may be the cheapest on PSN, but since some similar smartphone releases are much less expensive and take a lot longer to beat, it does bring up the debate of proper game pricing. Regardless of what it should ultimately cost, though, Mutant Blobs Attack!!! is a fun, quirky game that anyone can enjoy.

SUMMARY: Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!!! is a fun, quirky game where you get to eat everything. And I mean everything.

  • THE GOOD: It’s fun, cute, and it’s a great Vita launch title.
  • THE BAD: Short; gets bland pretty quickly.
  • THE UGLY: It’s the cheapest launch title…at $8.

SCORE: 8.0
