Posted on January 25, 2012 AT 09:24am
THE BUZZ: SNK Playmore, creators of the original Neo Geo systems, are set to release a brand new Neo Geo Pocket.
The new device has no official name at the moment but has looks similar to an iPhone. Located on the top of the device are the L1, L2, R1, and R2 buttons and an AV out jack, the bottom of the device has buttons to control volume, brightness, and a headphone jack. The system has an analogue stick with A, B, C and D buttons located on the face, squashed between them is a 4.3 inch screen. On the right hand side is an SD card slot (the system comes with 2GB of internal memory) and a power switch.
The Neo Geo will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles:
- World Heroes
- Ultimate 11
- Top Player’s Golf
- Sengoku
- Nam-1975
- Mutation Nation
- Last Resort
- King of Monsters
- Frenzy
- Cyber Lip
- Fatal Fury Special
- Art of Fighting
- Super Sidekicks
- League Bowling
- Metal Slug
- Magician Lord
- Baseball Stars Professional
- Samurai Shodown
- King of Fighters ’94
- Fatal Fury
No release date or price point for the device have been announced.
EGM’s TAKE: This is a bolt from the blue, considering that the last Neo Geo device, the Neo Geo Pocket Color, never managed to surpass two million in sales during its lifespan, mainly due to Nintendo’s market dominance, it seems odd that they have returned for another go. It appears that this new Neo Geo isn’t designed for physical games, as far as we can tell, and is more aimed at reliving the classics, perhaps via download, due to the lack of a cart slot or any sort of Wi-Fi connectivity, though it has good internal memory as well as the SD slot. However, it’s unlikely that firms are going to start producing new games for the system any time soon. The device looks sleek, but retro, and may appeal to some, however Nintendo and Sony shouldn’t be worrying themselves over this shock announcement.
